A different Phantoms than the Affleck flick

Ubisoft’s cutting ties with two of its free-to-play titles that weren’t as successful as it had hoped. Later this year, the servers for bothGhost Recon PhantomsandThe Mighty Quest for Epic Lootwill be permanently shut down.

Ghost Recon Phantomsis a shooter based on Ubisoft’sGhost Reconfranchise. It has been around for four years, but that comes to an end on December 1. According toSteamDB, Phantomshas around 1,000 concurrent players at any given time (although this number is likely low given that some people play directly through UPlay). This is a sliver of the 20,000 concurrents it was pulling two years ago.

Accompanying the announcement, Ubisoft disabled thePhantoms‘ online shop. In-game currency can no longer be bought. However, existing already-purchased currency won’t be refunded or transferred over to any other Ubisoft game. It simply has to be used before December 1.

The other title,The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot, sees its shuttering a bit sooner. That game will cease operations on October 25. In a surprisingly sterileFAQ, the publisher outlines the same details as withPhantoms: It wasn’t as successful as everyone hoped and no refunds will be offered.

Bad news for the few people who were still playing these games, but inconsequential news for everyone else. That’s business. If something stops making money, pull the plug. Cynical and callous, maybe, but also smart.
