We’ve got wizard boots on the ground
Ascendant Studios has a release date for its debut game.Immortals of Aveumis a story-driven, single-player game about battlemages and spell-based warfare arriving for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on July 20.
First revealed atThe Game Awards 2022,Immortals of Aveumis the first game from Ascendant Studios, a new development house made up of several video game veterans, including formerDead Spacedeveloper Bret Robbins.Immortalsis getting published under Electronic Arts’ EA Originals label, too.

As for whatImmortals of Aveumis? Well, it’s a bit different. We attended a briefing in which Ascendant described it as a “magic shooter.” It is a first-person game where you use magic as your bullets. Different types of magic, quite literally described as red, blue, or green, act as both weapons and elements for abilities. You ca get a good look at the magic below in today’sreveal trailer:
I’ve got the magic in me
During our briefing, we were told how the idea spawned from playingCall of Dutyand imagining that chaotic battlefield in a fantasy setting. Dragons instead of helicopters, wizards instead of infantry, etc. Honestly,Immortals of Aveumnails that vibe.
There’s a strange mix of military and magic that’s just alien enough to pique my curiosity, like ifThe Eternalsfell intoBattlefield. That said, the actual gameplay mixes “bullets”—gauntlet skills that fire like a shotgun or machinegun would—and full-on spells that can enact some real chaos on the field.

Immortals of Aveumis also a single-player, story-driven game. Picking upAveumwon’t add another battle pass to your life. It’s also, however, a full-priced game: $59.99 on PC, and $69.99 for consoles. There’s also a Deluxe Edition for $10 extra on both platforms, with a unique sigil and some gear.
It’s a little strange, but definitely different than what it could have been. Color me curious to see just howImmortals of Aveumcomes together for its July 20 release date on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Epic.
